Updated: April 23 2026

As of April 2026, home internet in Austria costs between 20 and 60 EUR per month depending on technology and speed. Fiber plans from A1 and Magenta reach up to 1 Gbit/s in major cities, while Drei offers same-day 5G fixed wireless setup from 25 EUR per month. According to the RTR (Austrian telecom regulator), over 60% of Austrian households now have access to speeds above 100 Mbit/s. Most contracts run 24 months, though shorter-term options exist.

What Types of Internet Connections Are Available in Austria?

  • Fiber (FTTH/FTTB)

Fiber-to-the-home or fiber-to-the-building offers the fastest and most reliable speeds, often up to 1 Gbit/s symmetrical. Fiber coverage is growing in Austria, particularly in Vienna, Graz, and Linz, but is not yet available everywhere. Providers include A1, Magenta, and regional operators like Fonira.

  • Cable (Coax/DOCSIS)

Cable internet uses the existing TV cable infrastructure. Magenta is the dominant cable provider in Austria (formerly UPC), offering speeds up to 500 Mbit/s or more. Cable is widely available in urban areas and offers a good balance of speed and price.

  • DSL (VDSL/ADSL)

DSL uses the telephone line infrastructure. A1 is the main DSL provider. Speeds vary widely depending on your distance from the exchange, typically ranging from 16 to 100 Mbit/s. It is the most widely available technology but is gradually being replaced by fiber.

  • Fixed Wireless (LTE/5G)

A growing alternative, especially in areas without fiber or cable. Drei, Magenta, and A1 all offer home internet via 4G/5G routers. Speeds can be excellent in areas with strong 5G coverage (up to 300+ Mbit/s) but can be inconsistent during peak hours.

How Do You Set Up Home Internet in Austria?

Setting up home internet in Austria takes six steps, from checking what is available at your address to going live. You will need a Meldezettel or rental contract as proof of address, and an Austrian bank account (IBAN) for direct debit. Make sure you have secured your housing first, as your address determines which providers and speeds are available.

  1. 1

Check your address for available services

Use the address-check tool on each ISP's website (A1, Magenta, Drei) to confirm which technologies and speeds are available at your specific property. The RTR Broadband Atlas also offers a public coverage map.

  2. 2

    Choose a provider and plan

Compare bundles carefully; A1, Magenta, and Drei all offer internet + TV + mobile bundles that can be cheaper than separate contracts. Contracts typically run 12-24 months.

  3. 3

    Gather your documentation

Passport or national ID for identity; Meldezettel or rental contract for proof of Austrian address. Foreign nationals should also have their residence permit ready.

  4. 4

    Sign the contract

Online, in-store, or by phone. Contracts are in German; visit a city store if you need English assistance. An Austrian IBAN is required for direct debit.

  5. 5

    Schedule installation

Technician visit needed for fibre or cable. DSL providers often ship a self-install kit. Same-day 5G setup is possible with Drei or A1 fixed wireless.

  6. 6

    Go live and configure equipment

Router ships pre-configured. Austrian ISPs may require their own modem, but you can usually add your own router in bridge mode.

From sign-up to going live typically takes 1–2 weeks for cable/DSL; fibre installations can take 4–6 weeks if new infrastructure is needed. Re-activating a previous tenant's line is usually faster. While you wait, a prepaid SIM with a mobile data allowance can bridge the gap.

What Internet Tips Should Expats in Austria Know?

  • If you need internet immediately, Drei's fixed wireless plans are the fastest to set up. Buy a 5G router and you are online the same day. In the meantime, a prepaid SIM card with mobile data can bridge the gap.
  • Bundle discounts are common: combining internet with a mobile plan or TV from the same provider (A1 or Magenta) can save 5–15 EUR per month. See our cost of living guide for a full budget breakdown.
  • Most contracts have a 24-month minimum term. If you are unsure how long you will stay, look for providers with shorter commitments or fixed wireless options.
  • Use tariffvergleich.at or durchblicker.at to compare plans and find the best deal for your address and usage patterns.
